Saturday's Excerpt – The Silent Cry

"I do take some responsibility for adding to your pain, and the only solution I can come up with for both our sakes is to distance ourselves from one another. If we’re both hurting one another, either intentionally or unintentionally, then how can this union be good? I don’t know who I am anymore. I do know, though, that the love we shared was very special, different from anything I’ve ever experienced, and I’ll never be sorry that it happened. I just need to sort out what I really want for my life, just as you do. "

"I know what I want. You. I will change. I’ll do anything for you, Sam," she pleaded.

Samantha flung open the door. "J.C., what’s the matter? It’s the middle of the night," she said, her voice alarmed as she led her into the apartment. "Are you sick?"

J.C. shook her head slowly. "Please, Sam, I need to talk to you. I’m going crazy without you."

Samantha frowned as she wrapped her bathrobe tighter around herself. "I told you earlier how I feel," she said firmly. "Nothing you can say will change that. You shouldn’t have come here."

J.C. raised her eyes, and then looked into Samantha’s. "I need to feel you next to me again. I need to hold you and be held by you. You can’t deny what we shared." Her voice beseeched Samantha to remember. "You want it, too. I feel it. You want me as much as I want you. We belong together."

Samantha studied J.C.’s face. "Please, let’s just forget the past. It’ll only destroy us. What we had is over and we can’t go back," she insisted. "We were never meant to be."

"Why can’t we go back to those happy times? Don’t you remember what we had together? I know you haven’t forgotten the dreams we shared and all our good times." She softly brushed her fingertips over Samantha’s bare arm, knowing that her touch affected Samantha as much as touching Samantha affected her.

Saturday's Excerpt – The Silent Cry

J.C. looked up hoping to conceal the pain Samantha's words caused. "We used to be so close, Sam. It seems like it was years ago now." She swallowed hard. "I love you. That has never stopped for me. I don't know why you ended our relationship. I was so hurt when you never visited me in jail. I thought you didn't care. I couldn't take it when you said you didn't want to see me anymore. I don't care about anything anymore…especially now with Harry gone." A tear slid from her eye, making a slow descent down her cheek. "I don't know what happened that night; I wish to God I could remember, but I can't. When I came here that night I thought that maybe you would have missed me so much that you would want me back." She cleared her throat. "But I swear to you that I did not kill Harry. I know I was set up and I've been racking my brain trying to figure this out." She twisted her fingers through her hair. "I don't have any recollection of anything after I left here that night. At first, I thought I was losing my mind. I just wish I could remember," she sobbed.

Saturday's Excerpt – The Silent Cry

Jordan laid a hand on Samantha's trembling shoulder. "Stay away from her, Samantha," she warned. "What you had with her is over. You can't help her anymore. God knows you tried, but you can't change someone who doesn't want to be changed."

Samantha quietly closed the door behind Jordan, and then walked back into her living room. She paced the floor for a few minutes before wearily sinking into a chair. She shivered as an icy chill enveloped her. Her mind was traumatized by Jordan's news. She knew firsthand how livid J.C. could become when she was provoked, but she also knew the tender, sweeter side of her. There was no way in hell anyone could ever convince her that J.C. was capable of murder. She had to find out the truth about what really happened.

Saturday's Excerpt – The Silent Cry

J.C. nodded as Samantha's hand brushed her own causing it to tremble even more. "Thanks, Sam. I owe you one the next time you're at Harry's." She gulped at the drink, feeling its healing warmth quickly spreading through her and calming her wobbly insides.

"You don't owe me anything. What's going on with you tonight? What's really wrong?"

She shook her head slowly back and forth. "Sam, how can I tell you when I don't even know myself?" She took another swallow of her drink. "I just have this terrible emptiness inside. I can't stand being away from you," she whispered in a cracked voice. "Why can't we be together again?"

Her eyes pleaded with Samantha's. "It would be different this time. I promise. I'm losing my mind being away from you. I'll change, but just give me some time."

"You're losing your mind because it's saturated with alcohol. You're incapable of feeling anything except the fear of where your next drink is coming from."
