 A loud knock on her door caused her heart to leap into her throat. She peered cautiously through the peephole and recognized Karl’s ruddy face. He had someone with him, but she couldn’t make out any details. Maybe it was a trap. Had someone tailed Karl and found out that he could lead them to her? She didn’t want to open the door. Maybe he had a gun to his back. She glanced over her shoulder. She had no way of escaping. Was this going to be how it all ended? She briefly closed her eyes, saying a silent prayer and then flung the door open. 

Karl stepped aside, ushering the stranger inside, then quickly shut and bolted the door. He removed his trench coat and hung it on the hook next to Kera’s jacket. He was dressed as usual in a suit. The gray shade seemed to match the gray sky. His broad shoulders filled out the suit jacket. His pleasant round face looked fatigued.

 Samantha flung open the door. "J.C., what’s the matter? It’s the middle of the night," she said, her voice alarmed as she led her into the apartment. "Are you sick?"

Kera’s heart pounded. She didn’t like the way the woman was staring at her. The brunette’s eyes traveled swiftly from Kera’s thin frame to her eyes. The woman was impeccably dressed. Her figure was trim and her long brown hair cascaded over her shoulders. Her face was beautiful with clear green eyes and high cheekbones. Maybe she was new and didn’t know the proper procedures for dealing with Annette. The way her eyes were scrutinizing Kera unnerved her, making her raise her guard. Could she have been hired to track Kera down? Kera knew that she couldn’t let the woman see her mounting fear. That would be a dead giveaway so she quickly composed herself as she returned the woman’s smile. 

"No. I made a wrong turn. I actually came in for directions, but since I’m here, I think I’ll just look around for a while if that’s okay. At least until the rain lets up." 

Kera nodded. "Just let me know if you need some help." She moved to a corner of the store and pretended to be arranging shoes while she kept an eye on the woman out of the corner of her eye. The uneasiness stayed with her. She wondered if she should make a quick exit, then realized that would be the worst thing she could do at this point. That would surely cause the woman’s suspicions to be aroused.

Samantha studied J.C.’s face. "Please, let’s just forget the past. It’ll only destroy us. What we had is over and we can’t go back," she insisted. "We were never meant to be." 

"Why can’t we go back to those happy times? Don’t you remember what we had together? I know you haven’t forgotten the dreams we shared and all our good times." She softly brushed her fingertips over Samantha’s bare arm, knowing that her touch affected Samantha as much as touching Samantha affected her.

 Summer’s face softened. "No, we can’t Kera. But hopefully I can ease some of this loneliness for you." She patted Kera’s hand again. 

Suddenly Kera felt safe. It was hard to explain how such a simple gesture could make her feel protected, but it did. And a part of her was happy that Summer would be taking Karl’s place. As much as she’d miss the sporadic rapport Karl and she had managed to build over the last two years, it would be nice to have a woman to talk to. But she could never tell Summer that she’d confided to Annette about her true identity. Just as she’d never told Karl. And she could never tell either of them that Annette was holding that information against her. Thinking about Annette left a bad taste in her mouth. 

"I can’t give you the details about what’s going on with the case. I can tell you that instead of Karl contacting you monthly or bi-monthly, I’ll be in contact daily. Karl and I thought it might be a good idea if I became your new roommate." 

Kera lifted her eyebrows in surprise. "My roommate? I’m getting twenty-four hour a day protection?" Suddenly, it dawned on her the reason why. "I’m no longer safe, am I?"
