Saturday's Excerpt – Partners: Beyond The Shadows

Johanna let tears of frustration and fear roll down her cheeks, not caring how she appeared to their friends. The room had gone uncomfortably quiet as all eyes focused on Frankie and her. "The time's up, Frankie. We've run out of time!" she cried. "Don't you care about what this is doing to me?" She felt the immediate tension that enveloped the room. She sniffed. "I'm sorry," she said, blinking as she looked at her guests. "I just don't know how much more I can take."

"Don't apologize, sweetie." Kate's jaw was set. "Look what you're putting Johanna through, Frankie. Think about her. I can't believe you're doing this to her. I'm talking as your friend now and not as a deputy, but this is not the Frankie I know and love. What the hell is going on with you?"

"Frankie, we're your friends. You need all the help you can get," Will stated. "Why are you shutting us out?"

Frankie sat staring at them but said nothing. Johanna wondered what was going through her mind. No smart comebacks…nothing.

"Tell us what Will and I can do to help, Sheriff." Trey said. "We can't sit back and wait for something to happen."

Saturday's Excerpt – Partners: Deception

Johanna sat back and listened, observing Trey's facial expressions as Frankie asked the questions. She watched doubt creep into his eyes as he picked his glass back up. "I
don't know. Neither of us is into social media."

"Do you know if Kyle is married?" Frankie asked.

"Will mentioned that he has a wife and is raising his late sister's son. They currently live in Seattle."

"I assume they'll be joining him if you hire him." Frankie's eyebrows drew together. "When will Kyle be arriving?"

Trey exhaled loudly. "He's already here."

Frankie's eyes narrowed. "Before he even has the job?"

He nodded.

"Did his family come with him?" Johanna asked.

He shook his head. "No. He's going to send for them after he secures an apartment or affordable home. At least that's what Will says."

Johanna's brow puckered. "Trey, what aren't you telling us? Something doesn't sound right."

He blew his breath out dejectedly. "Will already hired him."

"Does he have the authority?" Frankie asked, surprised. "I don't mean to pry into your personal affairs, Trey, so please don't take it the wrong way."

"I'm not," he assured Frankie with a weak smile. He folded his hands. "I've given Will some authority due to our personal relationship, but never any authority where it concerns the finances of the business. Even with minor decisions, he's always come to me first to seek my approval before moving ahead. That's what makes this whole situation so strange."

"Have you confronted Will about hiring him?" Frankie questioned.

"I only found out he'd gone ahead and hired Kyle after I called you this morning, Johanna. I should have called you back and told you right away, but I'm still processing it. Needless to say, I did let Will know in no uncertain terms that I wasn't happy about it." He swallowed hard. "I don't know what to do. I can't believe Will would do something like this. He has no authority to hire anyone and he knows it."

Saturday's Excerpt – Partners: Winds Of Fire

"You've gone quiet." Frankie took her elbow as they made their way to the car. "What's going on in that beautiful head of yours?"

"Something's not right, Frankie."

Frankie's eyes slanted. "You think?"

"I want to contact past and present friends of Kendall's."

Frankie turned her head and looked at her. "From what Alec said, she never confided in anyone. Now that would be a waste of time and effort."

"I suppose you're right. It was just a thought. I'll put it on the back burner for now." Johanna pursed her lips. "You know we won't be happy until Thatcher gets nailed for more than screwing around on his wife. And we want to be a part of his take down."

"I know, hon, but we keep rehashing the same thing over and over. Let's take it one step at a time. Alec knows we'll uncover more. He expects nothing less from us." She grinned wryly.

Saturday's Excerpt – Partners: Beyond The Shadows

He leaned forward in his chair. "There was a horrific murder committed in a small town near Bradford over thirty-five years ago. Does the name Carson Fellows mean anything to you?"

There was a sharp intake of air and then an ominous silence at the end of the line. "Mom, are you still there?" Frankie asked worriedly after several seconds had elapsed.

"I'm…I'm here." Selma cleared her throat. "It's all over town that the murdering rapist son-of-a-bitch is out of prison. We'd have never known if he hadn't violated his parole. Out only six months. He never should have been released after what he did."

Frankie and Johanna looked at each other in shock. Selma rarely uttered a curse word, but when she did, it meant her normally pleasant, slow to anger demeanor had reached the boiling point and control was no longer possible.

"Has anyone in Bradford spotted him?" the Sheriff asked. "Has he tried to make contact with anyone he might have been acquainted with from his past?"

"No. I doubt he'd dare show his face here again. He wouldn't last a day. Actually, there's no reason for him to come here anyway. He has no family or friends left here."

"That's what I thought," George answered quietly. He ran a large hand over his jaw. "Selma, I have to tell you something, but I need you to promise me that you'll stay calm."
