Saturday's Excerpt – Breaking Free

Even though they’d spent only a short time together, it had been comfortable. Izzy was easy to talk to and her presence was relaxing. She seemed eager to settle into Beacher and Katelyn would help her make that transition a pleasant one if Izzy wanted her to.

Stop it! She commanded her mind as it began imagining all sorts of scenarios. She bit her bottom lip. Just because Izzy was new in town and obviously unattached gave Katelyn no reason to assume the woman was a lesbian just because Katelyn’s mind tried to will her to be so. Izzy had given her no reason to assume she was gay. She hadn’t mentioned anyone coming to Beacher with her and had seemed eager to accept Katelyn’s invitation. Of course, there could be many reasons why she’d come alone. Perhaps a companion would be joining her later.

"I’m sorry," Izzy apologized. "I didn’t see you." She backed away from the booth, scanning the area for another available seat. All seats were full so she resigned herself to the fact that she’d have to come back another day. The coffee would have to wait.

The woman gently touched Izzy’s arm. "Please take the booth. You were here first." She smiled brightly.

Izzy returned the smile with one of her own. "Thank you, but I think we both got here at the same time. We could toss a coin," she teased good-naturedly. She wondered if the attractive blonde was waiting for someone.

The woman laughed softly as she looked into Izzy’s eyes. "Or we could share it if you’re not expecting anyone. I just stopped in for a quick cup of coffee."

"So did I," Izzy replied. "I’m not expecting anyone and I’d enjoy the company," she added quickly.

Saturday's Excerpt – Breaking Free

No, she couldn’t let her mind drift and inadvertently let her feelings toward Katelyn be known. Beacher was a small town and even though Katelyn was friendly to her now, would she change her attitude if she found out that Izzy had ended her marriage five years ago to succumb to her hidden desires to be with a woman? How did she know how Katelyn felt about anything?

They’d had a short friendly conversation, but that was all it was. She had to keep her guard up. It would be easy if Katelyn weren’t so damned attractive with a voice that felt like soft fingertips roaming over her needy flesh every time she spoke.

Before Katelyn could respond, he turned to Izzy. "We haven't seen her this happy in a long time. It doesn't matter how you two met…I'm just thrilled that you've come into her life and put that beautiful smile back on her face. And I want to be the first to thank you. It's not hard to see how much you two mean to each other. You couldn't ask for a better family to be a part of either, Izzy."

The rest of Katelyn's family enthusiastically voiced their approval and held up their glasses in a toast as they smiled at Izzy and Katelyn. Izzy felt Katelyn stiffen. She turned and glanced at Katelyn. Her face had drained of all color and an expression of shock was etched on her beautiful face. Suddenly it dawned on Izzy what they were referring to.

Saturday's Excerpt – Breaking Free

Izzy's insides turned to jelly as she met Katelyn's penetrating gaze. She hadn't felt like this in a long time. The emotion had lain dormant deep inside, and now was suddenly being resurrected without warning. She wasn't quite sure how to handle these sudden stirrings. Were they erupting from loneliness or from a genuine attraction to this stranger? She wasn't sure and right now she didn't care. Katelyn had touched a part of her that no woman, for years, had been able to.

A bell on the door tinkled merrily as she opened the door. Her eyes swept around the crowded room until she spotted an empty booth in the back. She reached it at the same time an attractive blonde did.

"I'm sorry," Izzy apologized. "I didn't see you." She backed away from the booth, scanning the area for another available seat. All seats were full so she resigned herself to the fact that she'd have to come back another day. The coffee would have to wait.

The blonde shrugged out of her pink parka as she slid into the bright red vinyl-covered booth. She rubbed her hands vigorously together. "It's freezing out there. And wouldn't you know it, I walked out the door without my gloves this morning." She glanced toward the window. "I hope we don't get too much more snow."
