Saturday's Excerpt – The Other Side

Ally lay on her bed, but sleep eluded her. She longed for Clare. Clare had a gentle way of making even the most distressful times seem all right again. She ached to see her beautiful face and the feeling of being safe and protected in her loving arms. Clare was her rock, the only person Ally had ever fully trusted. She shakily ran a hand through her hair as she remembered their fleeting times together.

Clare knew how important politics were to Ally and had known it since their first meeting twenty-five years ago. She had gracefully backed away when Ally’s aspirations began to bear fruit, but was at her side whenever Ally beckoned and Ally knew that Clare would be by her side in a heartbeat if she summoned her now. She wouldn’t, though; not this time. It wasn’t fair to Clare to bring her in and out of her life without total commitment. Clare deserved a life of her own, but most importantly she deserved the happiness and stability of a life Ally had always been unable to provide her, but desperately wanted to.
