Katie was her own age and a classmate, and Callie couldn’t run from her even if she wanted to. She practiced repeatedly in her mind what she would do if she sensed that Katie might harbor the same feelings about girls that she did. Even though she knew it was too much to hope for, it comforted her to pretend that Katie did indeed harbor those same feelings. As cool and calm as her mind portrayed her imaginary confrontation with Katie, Callie knew that probably wouldn’t be the case in reality. Katie already made her turn to gelatin when she was near, and especially when she smiled at her.
